PLAY-DOH GUINNESS RECORDS

For the 60th anniversary of Play-Doh – Hasbro, the ad agency Delicatessen commissioned me to help them design a massive mural inspired by Huichol art, to be displayed at the forecourt of the Republic Square in Mexico City and get a Guinness World Records for the brand.

To set the world record, 20 people worked continuously for 12 hours with 26,896 cans of Play-Doh of 20 different colors to create the 11x11 meters Huichol-inspired mural.

Here you will be able to see the whole process. Enjoy!

INSPIRATION

Huichol art broadly groups the most traditional and most recent innovations in the folk art and handcrafts produced by the Huichol people, who live in the states of Jalisco,

Durango, and Nayarit in Mexico. The unifying factor of the work is the colorful decoration using symbols and designs which date back centuries. The most common and commercially successful products are “yarn paintings” and objects decorated with small commercially produced beads. Yarn paintings consist of commercial yarn pressed into boards coated with wax and resin and are derived from a ceremonial tablet called a neirika.

THE SKETCH

First, we developed a scale vectorial pixel art style sketch with 26,896 pixels.

We tried different shapes and compositions until we found the one we and Play-Doh loved the most.

THE TEST

Then we printed a 1x1 meter zone of the artwork to test colors, size, and to time the construction of it

so we would know how much time and how many people we would need to put together the whole 11x11 meters artwork.

We made a few adjustments and we were ready to go!

THE ASSEMBLY

It took 20 people working continuously for more than 12 hours to put together the 26,896 cans of Play-Doh and make the 11x11 meters mural.

It was worth it.
